As of January 1 of this year, fares for BVG tickets (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe) in tariff zone AB of the Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB, Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg) have been increased. On average, the overall increase amounts to approximately 6%.
The reasons for this measure are quite straightforward and were objectively predictable: rising costs for energy, fuel, personnel, and investments in public transport. Moreover, relatively weak revenue from ticket sales has so far failed to establish a clear and reliable trend toward a noticeable increase in income.
Traditionally, the federal government and the executive authorities of the federal states assume a substantial share of the costs in this sector. However, their budgets are currently severely constrained. The adjustment of ticket prices is intended to ensure the uninterrupted operation of public transport in Berlin.
As a result, the following prices apply:
The price of a single ticket in zones A (covering the city center enclosed by the S-Bahn ring) and B (extending to the city boundary) is 4.00 euros (+20 cents);
The price of a four-ride ticket AB is 12.40 euros (+80 cents);
A short-distance ticket in tariff zone AB costs 2.80 euros (+20 cents);
The monthly “social travel pass” Berlin-Ticket S (tariff zones A and B) for low-income Berlin residents now costs 27.50 euros (previously 19 euros);
A 24-hour ticket (zone AB) costs 11.20 euros (previously 10.60 euros).
The monthly pass for local and regional public transport in Germany, the Deutschlandticket (D-Ticket), now costs 63 euros (previously 58 euros). As is well known, it allows travel on regional trains (RB, RE, IRE), suburban trains (S-Bahn, SPNV), buses, trams, and underground trains (U-Bahn).
However, the D-Ticket does not apply to long-distance transport (IC, EC, ICE and RE operated by DB Fernverkehr AG), nor to services provided by private operators (FlixTrain or FlixBus). It also cannot be used in first-class carriages.
Certain types of tickets that have seen low demand and have lost their attractiveness will no longer be sold.
IMPORTANT
Tickets purchased in 2025 but not used for various reasons do not lose their validity. They can still be used in the usual manner. Tickets with old prices that require validation remain valid until June 30, 2026. Alternatively, they may be returned to the transport company that sold them.
