The Berlin Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family (Senatsverwaltung für Bildung, Jugend und Familie), together with the Berlin state sports association (Landessportbund Berlin), the Berlin youth sports club (Sportjugend Berlin), the Berlin Swimming Association (Berliner Schwimm-Verband) and the administrations of seven city swimming facilities have announced another series of free swimming courses for Berlin schoolchildren. Training will take place during this year’s summer school holidays.
Целевая аудитория: the programs are intended for primary school pupils (from grade 4) and lower secondary school pupils (grades 7 to 10) who do not have the required level of swimming skills.
Количество мест: around 3,600 places are planned during the summer holidays, of which 3,000 are allocated for primary school pupils and 600 – for lower secondary school teenagers.
Места проведения: training will be carried out at seven Berlin swimming facilities.
Инклюзивность: in the first three weeks of the holidays special courses for children with disabilities and for anyone interested will take place at the Fischerinsel (Fischerinsel 11, 10179 Berlin Mitte) and at the Gropiusstadt water complex (Lipschitzallee 27-33, 12351 Berlin). Special courses for children with disabilities and all those interested will be offered.
Период проведения и расписание: lessons take place throughout all six weeks of the holidays from 13 July to 21 August. Each week includes daily 45-minute training sessions from Monday to Friday.

The program of the mentioned free courses is aimed at developing reliable water-safety skills in children and at improving overall swimming proficiency. Lessons are conducted by experienced instructors in specially equipped pools, which ensures maximum safety and comfort for participants. It is appropriate to recall that during the Easter, summer and autumn holidays last year a total of 6,178 children took part in 649 similar courses.
The Berlin Senator for Education, Youth and Family Katharina Günther-Wünsch) particularly emphasized in this regard: «The ability to stay afloat is a vital skill for emergency situations, which justifies our commitment to tried-and-tested methods of intensive swim instruction during school holiday periods. The high interest in these programs confirms their ongoing relevance and the positive reception of this offer by parents and children…».
