From June 6 to 7 (Saturday – Sunday) Berlin will host another Italian street food festival, harmoniously combining culinary traditions, regional characteristics and the culture of quick meals Bel Paese (another name for Italy - «Beautiful Country»).
It will take place in the well-known multifunctional complex Ost Hafen Berlin (Alt-Stralau 1-2, Friedrichshain 10245). The site of Berlin's once-largest industrial port (which began full operation in 1913) now houses numerous offices of various companies and firms, as well as equipped venues for large-scale cultural events, festivals and spectacular concerts.
The upcoming festival is expected to once again confirm its reputation as a gastronomic celebration and a true «survival ground» for fast-food gourmands. The main thing is to «work up» an appetite to fully appreciate the wide variety of tastes offered by this grand «feast of the belly». This event is a genuine mosaic of modern Italian street cuisine. It is enough to mention just a few of the most colorful street-food examples from several Italian provinces:
- impressive green olives stuffed with minced meat, breaded and fried to a golden crust (province of Ascoli Piceno);
- arancini (rice balls), sweet cannoli and crispy panelle, reflecting Arab and Mediterranean culinary influences (Sicily);
- thin flatbreads with prosciutto (ham), cheese and arugula, as well as fried pieces of dough with meat delicacies and cheeses (Emilia-Romagna, a region in the northern part of Italy);
- panini (the traditional Italian hot sandwich). Essentially, it is a closed sandwich with prosciutto, mozzarella and pesto – a sauce made from pine nuts, fresh basil, Parmesan, garlic and olive oil. The distinctive feature of panini is that they are grilled: the cheese melts, and the bread becomes crispy and acquires characteristic grill marks. (Rome, a metropolitan city - territorial unit since January 1, 2015);
- fritto misto (deep-fried seafood), focaccia di Recco (a flatbread with a cheese filling) – the town of Recco (region of Liguria);
- panzerotti: pastries made from soft dough, fried in oil in a pan. The filling is a mixture of mozzarella and tomatoes. Or, alternatively: mushrooms, corn, ham, chicken or pumpkin purée (region of Apulia).
However, in fairness, it should be noted that despite the diversity and variability of street food, the street-food concept based on quick «snacks on the go» does not quite align with Italians' «profound» attitude toward food. This is due to many factors. These include, for example, a genuine respect for family culinary traditions developed over centuries, and the art of harmonizing food and wine, creating a symphony of unified unforgettable sensations.
Also important for Italians is their deeply rooted preference for products produced or grown in a particular region or close to their place of residence. For this reason, the street-food eating culture has so far found very limited spread in the country. It is mainly observed exclusively in the largest cities, which are often far from the notion of authentic Italian identity.
The festival's musical program will feature the band «The Limoncellos» (Saturday), the Berlin ensemble «The Jakkle Band» (Sunday) and Italian singer, actress and songwriter Martina Attili (Martina Attili). Guests can also look forward to DJ sets, Italian karaoke sessions and entertainment for children.
Festival hours: June 6 – from 11:00 to 22:00, June 7 – from 11:00 to 22:00.
Admission price: 6 euros, children and teenagers up to 16 years old – free.
